Russia is using COVID-19 to intentionally spread disinformation and cause division in the United States. The U.S. government has known for years that the Russians have been spreading disinformation regarding virus related issues, like Ebola and the flu. Circulating COVID lies is just another attempt to sow division in the USA. Clearly, Russia has something to gain with their ongoing efforts to destabilize the American way of life.
Additionally, researchers have discovered that just 12 people are responsible for the bulk of the misleading claims and outright lies about COVID-19 vaccines on social media. These sites echo Russian disinfo narratives and their content is shared and shared again until it is amplified across US audiences. Known as the “Disinformation Dozen,” these accounts hold immense power over Americans and their perspectives. Claims from the "Disinformation Dozen" range from COVID denial to pushing false cures; anything but the vaccines.
As COVID continues to rage in the United States, we have got to stand up to Russian disinformation. We can not let America fall to disinfo. We can not let Russia divide us.
